Template FAQs
Common questions about the TPO & Conservation Area Tree Work Check Form — what it captures, when to use it, and how to make it your own.
What is a Tree Preservation Order (TPO)?
A council order protecting a specific tree or trees. You must get the local planning authority’s written consent before cutting, pruning, felling or uprooting a protected tree — doing the work without it is a criminal offence.
What are the rules for trees in a conservation area?
You must give the council six weeks’ written notice before working on a tree in a conservation area, so they can decide whether to protect it. The form captures this so the notice is given before any work starts.
Are small trees exempt?
In a conservation area, notice isn’t needed for trees with a trunk under 7.5cm in diameter (measured 1.5m above the ground), or under 10cm if you’re thinning to help other trees grow. The form records the trunk size to check.
How do I find out if my tree is protected?
Your local council holds the records of TPOs and conservation areas. If you’re unsure, the form notes that so it can be checked before work is booked — never assume a tree is unprotected.
What happens if a tree is protected?
The work can still go ahead — it just needs the right consent (for a TPO) or notice (for a conservation area) first. This form starts that process so everything’s done properly and legally.
